<image:title>writing - Breaking Bulgarian: Why Translation Can Be Heartbreak</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s pretty sweet to see how much you end up writing when you’re designated a desk, a hotel room, and a Chinese takeout place within dangerous proximity. It was my brand spanking first time being awarded a residency and it blew my mind. I see why some people do this for a living. I wrote about it for Publishing Perspectives once here, and once here.</image:caption>

<image:caption>It’s strange to see your motherland portrayed just as you know her, but through the eyes of a foreigner. It has quite a jarring effect. I wrote this for the Chicago Reader.</image:caption>

<image:title>critique3 - Searching for Your Shield of Achilles Against Bullshit</image:title>
<image:caption>Anytime you can say bullshit in a headline is a day you’re winning. Bulgaria’s most adored author was coming to Chicago (the second city for Bulgarians, literally), and I was thrilled to write about his superb “The Physics of Sorrow”.</image:caption>

<image:title>critique3 - The Bulgarian Table, from Sudjuk to Shopska</image:title>
<image:caption>The life of a food critic is not so easy. You may imagine it as one sitting at an unreasonably oversized wooden table, hand and knife in hand, as various people rush towards you, all apologetic eyes and plates disappearing under schnitzel, but in reality, it’s the absolute anonymity factor coupled with an actual love for food and the ability to write about it that predicates any sort of success, if such even exists. Writing about Bulgarian cuisine, however, was important for me. Writing about a whole lot of other restaurants for the Chicago Reader was pretty cool also.</image:caption>

I’d been invited to the Sofia arm of the Sozopol Fiction Seminars as a panelist on translation, and he had just finished his first novel, for which he was already getting quite a bit of buzz.
